5. Strategic Preparation Tips
Prioritize Tier 2 Weightage: Since Tier 1 is qualifying, orient preparation toward Tier 2 depth—specifically Mathematical Abilities and English Language, which carry the highest weightage.
Master Previous Year Questions (PYQs): SSC repeats question types across quantitative aptitude and reasoning; solving the last 5 years’ papers builds speed and accuracy.
Daily Revision of Formulas & Vocabulary: Maintain separate formula sheets and vocabulary logbooks for root words, idioms, and one-word substitutions.
Do Not Ignore Qualifying Modules: Practice computer fundamentals and regular typing drills weekly to avoid disqualification in the Computer Knowledge and DEST modules.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What subjects are included in the SSC CGL Syllabus?
The SSC CGL Tier 1 exam covers four subjects: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. In Tier 2 Paper I, these core subjects are divided into distinct modules, alongside mandatory assessments in Computer Knowledge and the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST). Specialised posts also require Paper II (Statistics for JSO) or Paper III (General Studies: Finance and Economics for AAO).
Is there negative marking in the SSC CGL Exam?
Yes, negative marking applies to both tiers:
Tier 1: Deduction of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.
Tier 2 (Paper I): Deduction of 1 mark for every incorrect response in Section-I, Section-II, and Section-III (Computer Knowledge).
Tier 2 (Paper II & III): Deduction of 0.50 marks for every incorrect response.
How many tiers are conducted in the SSC CGL selection process?
The SSC CGL recruitment process comprises two computer-based tiers:
Tier 1: Preliminary screening test (qualifying in nature).
Tier 2: Mains examination (merit-determining), which includes objective subject papers, a computer proficiency module, and a data entry typing test.
Candidates who clear both stages proceed directly to document verification and medical examination.
Is SSC CGL Tier 1 qualifying in nature?
Yes, Tier 1 is strictly qualifying. The marks obtained in Tier 1 determine eligibility for appearing in Tier 2, but they are not included in the calculation of the final all-India merit list.
Is the Computer Knowledge module and DEST mandatory for all candidates?
Yes, Module-I (Computer Knowledge Test) and Module-II (Data Entry Speed Test) of Section-III in Paper I are compulsory for all candidates appearing in Tier 2. Both modules are qualifying in nature, though certain technical and ministerial posts mandate higher qualifying standards.
Where can I download the official SSC CGL Syllabus PDF?
